This event has now finished

We are looking forward to hosting a three-day, in-person Authorised Push Payment (APP) Fraud TechSprint on 27-29 September 2022 with the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).

We want everyone to be able to make payments safely and with confidence. That’s why, as the UK’s payments landscape evolves, we’re acting to protect consumers from APP fraud.

Since 2016, we’ve carried out a significant amount of work to prevent APP scams. The Contingent Reimbursement Model (CRM) Code and Confirmation of Payee (CoP) are crucial tools in reducing scams and protecting those who do fall victim. We want as many people as possible to benefit from the protections that these tools provide. We’re using our powers to ensure that more firms are able to offer the added security of CoP to their customers. We’ve also consulted on further measures to help fight APP scams and are now taking steps to prepare for proposed legislative changes around mandatory reimbursement for victims.

The TechSprint (commonly known as a ‘hackathon’) is a great opportunity to build on this important work and for industry to work collaboratively with regulators to develop innovative tech-led solutions that help identify and prevent APP fraud.

The agenda:

13 September 2022

10:00 – 11:30: Pre-sprint bootcamp for TechSprint participants

27 September 2022

08:45 – 09:15: Registration and refreshments

09:15 – 17:00: TechSprint Day One

  • Lunch and refreshments will be provided.
29 September 2022

08:45 – 09:15: Registration and refreshments

09:15 – 13:00: TechSprint Day Three

  • Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

14:00 – 17:00: Demo/showcase

  • Teams will present their solutions to a wider audience of stakeholders.

We have three capabilities that we want the event to focus on:

  • Use Case 1: Real time APP fraud prevention using new and existing technologies: what are the barriers and limitations to current (real-time) APP fraud prevention technologies and processes, and how might we encourage the firms we regulate to improve and adopt them?
  • Use Case 2: Enhanced Data Sharing; how FS firms and multiple sectors can share data and relevant analytics, securely in real-time, to spot and prevent APP fraud?
  • Use Case 3: Spotting fraud at source; communicating them to those in the chain, including PSPs so that they can take affirmative action and protect consumers.
